Press Release

New Eurosceptic campaign group urges national leaders to take ‘principled position' on the new EU Treaty.

Global Vision notes that Nicolas Sarkozy, along with Tony Blair and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, has rejected the idea of a referendum on the new EU treaty because they claim it will be merely an amending document. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, will most likely take the decision that Danish voters should not get a vote, either.

There is one European politician, however, who is insisting on a referendum - Ségolène Royal.

Ruth Lea, Director of Global Vision argues that, "The French Presidential results are of key significance for the UK - not least of all because Ségolène Royal has promised the French electorate another referendum on the new EU treaty, whereas Nicolas Sarkozy has said he will not hold another. Mme Royal's position is undoubtedly the principled position, whilst Sarkozy's, as Tony Blair's, is not."

Global Vision points out that the precise wording of the new treaty is not yet known because the German presidency is still working on it.

But, regardless of whether it is a ‘mini-treaty' or not, the people of Europe still deserve the right to voice their opinion on the future of the EU.
