Press Release, 22nd June 2007

Global Vision releases two polls today which convincingly show that the British people want a referendum before any new EU Treaty becomes the law in Britain.

The first poll – conducted between 1st - 3rd June by ICM – showed that 80% thought there should be referendum whilst only 15% thought not.

The second poll – conducted between 8th - 10th June by Populus – showed that 83% said yes to a referendum whilst only 14% said no.

Ruth Lea, Director of Global Vision, said, “Whatever the final outcome of this week’s EU talks and the subsequent developments in drafting a new EU Treaty, it is clear that the British people believe that a referendum on the Treaty is a must.”

“The Government promised a referendum on the Constitutional Treaty. It is apparent that the new Treaty will have serious constitutional implications. There must be a referendum on the Treaty.”

Lord Blackwell, Chairman of Global Vision, said, “The current negotiations over the proposed EU Treaty Changes once again expose clearly that many in Brussels have a very different agenda to Britain. They are still pursuing an outdated and inward looking model of European integration which has very little relevance to Britain's future as a global trading nation. The UK government should give people the choice in a referendum of whether to continue down this path or to negotiate a new, modern relationship for Britain based on free trade and cooperation.”
