Sarkozy’s election gives green light to a new EU Treaty that will have significant ‘integrationist’ agenda

Nicolas Sarkozy’s election as President of France has major implications not just for the future of France but also of all EU member states.  This is specifically the case concerning the forthcoming new EU Treaty.

Ruth Lea, Director of Global Vision, said,

"Nicolas Sarkozy's victory has major implications for the future of the EU and the UK. Mr Sarkozy clearly has ambitions for a new EU treaty which contains major constitutional changes rather than just a 'tidying up' exercise to 'make Europe work better'.

Mr Sarkozy's victory therefore increases the likelihood that the new treaty will have significant constitutional implications. It is, therefore, all the more important that the British people are given a referendum on the treaty."

Whilst no concrete proposals have been release, Sarkozy’s own plans for Europe are likely to include the creation of an EU President and Foreign Minister and the elimination of the national veto in many key areas.  He is also calling for EU tax harmonisation and protectionism.

Sara Rainwater, Manager of Global Vision, said,

“Sarkozy’s recent comments on wanting to protect France from globalisation should come as a stark warning to those who support free trade.  His policies risk the economic future not just of France but also the other Member States of the EU, including the UK.”
